Benedict's Test - Qualitative Test in Carbohydrates


This programme demonstrates in a video lesson, the procedure in the Qualitative test for Carbohydrates. In this Biochemistry Laboratory Test, the Benedict's test procedure is demonstrated. Benedict's test distinguishes reducing sugars from non reducing sugars. The procedure covers the description of the laboratory instruments and materials that are used in such tests.


At the end of the procedure, an observation of the test result is made and interpreted and a well balanced reaction equation is obtained.

Benedict's test distinguishes reducing sugars from non reducing sugars. Heating a mixture of Benedict's qualitative reagent and a reducing sugar such as gluscose in a basic medium (pH 10.5) leads to the reduction of cupric ions in Benedict's qualitative reagent to cuprous ions, with the formation of copper (I) oxide seen as a yellow to red precipitate in the mixture.
